This Cookie Policy explains how savesfbike.org uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies, and how you can control them. The short version: we do not set any cookies by default, we do not use analytics or advertising trackers, and the only thing we store in your browser is a small note remembering your cookie choice and a few display preferences. That note stays on your device and is never sent to us.
This policy is part of, and should be read with, our Privacy Policy. If you have questions, email [email protected].
What cookies and localStorage are
Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to save. Each time your browser loads a page from that site, it sends the cookie back to the website's server. Cookies can be used for useful things, such as keeping you signed in, but they are also the main tool advertisers and analytics companies use to recognize the same person across many visits and many websites.
localStorage is a related browser feature. It lets a website save small pieces of information on your device, but unlike cookies, the information is not automatically sent to the website's server with each request. It can be read only by scripts running on the same website that saved it. Information in localStorage remains until it is deleted by the site or by you.
Other similar technologies include sessionStorage (which is cleared when you close the tab), tracking pixels (tiny invisible images that report when a page or email is opened), and device fingerprinting (identifying a browser by its combination of settings). We use none of these except as described below.
Cookies and storage can be "first-party," set by the website you are visiting, or "third-party," set by another company whose content is embedded in the page. Everything savesfbike.org stores is first-party.
What we use
Our site uses localStorage for a small number of strictly necessary and preference purposes. No cookies are set by default. The table below lists every item.
| Name | Purpose | Type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
ssfb_cookie_consent |
Remembers the choice you made on our cookie notice, so we do not show you the notice on every page. | localStorage, first-party, strictly necessary | Until you clear your browser's site data, or 12 months, after which we ask again |
ssfb_ui_prefs |
Remembers minor display preferences, such as a light or dark color theme, or that you dismissed an announcement banner. | localStorage, first-party, preference | Until you clear your browser's site data |
These items contain only simple values like "accepted" or "dark." They do not contain your name, email address, or any identifier that could be used to recognize you, and they are not transmitted to our servers or anyone else.
If you block or clear localStorage, the site still works normally. You may simply see the cookie notice again or have to re-select your display preferences.
Server logs
Separately from browser storage, our hosting provider records basic request information (IP address, user agent, timestamp, and page requested) in server logs for security purposes. This does not involve cookies and is described in our Privacy Policy. Logs are typically kept for 30 days or less.
Forms
Submitting a contact, endorsement, or newsletter form does not set a cookie. Our form-handling provider may use its own spam-prevention measures on submission, which are limited to processing that single submission.
What we do not use
We made a deliberate choice to keep the site free of tracking. We do not use:
- Analytics cookies or scripts, such as Google Analytics, or any service that counts visitors by placing an identifier in your browser;
- Advertising or retargeting cookies, or ad networks of any kind;
- Social media pixels or widgets, such as the Meta (Facebook) pixel, embedded "Like" buttons, or embedded timelines;
- Session-recording or heatmap tools that capture your mouse movements or keystrokes;
- Third-party content delivery networks for fonts, icons, or code libraries. Everything is hosted on our own site, so loading a page does not contact Google Fonts or similar services;
- Fingerprinting or other techniques to identify your device without storage.
Because of this, there are no cookie categories for you to switch off, and we do not need a complicated consent manager.
Third-party content and outbound links
Our pages link to other websites, including the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (sfbike.org), city agencies, transit agencies, and social networks such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). Our "share" buttons are ordinary links. They do not load anything from the social network when you view our page, and they do not set cookies. Only if you click one will your browser open the social network's site, and from that point the network's own cookie and privacy policies apply.
If we ever embed third-party content, such as a video or a map, we will update this policy first and, where that content would set cookies, load it only after you click to activate it.
How to manage and clear cookies and site data
You are always in control of what your browser stores. Most browsers let you view, block, and delete cookies and site data (which includes localStorage) for all sites or just for savesfbike.org. Menu names change from time to time, but the steps below are a good starting point.

Private browsing
Every major browser offers a private or incognito mode. In that mode, cookies and localStorage are deleted automatically when you close the window, so our site will not remember your preferences between sessions.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Because we do not track you across sites, our site behaves the same whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track signal. We also honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as an opt-out of any sale or sharing of personal information, which we do not engage in anyway. Our Privacy Policy explains this in more detail.
Changes to this policy
If we add, remove, or change any cookie or storage item, we will update the table above and the "Last updated" date at the top of this page before the change goes live. If we ever introduce non-essential cookies, we will ask for your consent first rather than setting them by default.
